Beginner lessons are designed to give student a comprehensive and thorough foundation to build on. The course books are designed so each week you will be learning new material in a fun and easy way.
What you will learn:
- Drum kit knowledge, parts of the kit, drum skins, cymbals
- Reading notation starting with semibreves, minims, crotchets, quavers, semiquavers and rests.
- Basic rock beats, blues, shuffles, and grooves
- Performance pieces. Songs of your choice – transcriptions of the song will be provided at no extra cost.
- Writing beats and snare solos using the notation used in the reading section.
- Coordination exercises using two limbs, 3 limbs and then all four
- Rudiments, single stroke roll, double stroke roll, paradiddle and flams, and how to apply them on the kit
- Fill concepts using single cell phrasing
- Transcriptions. Learning to write down what you hear, starting with one bar patterns to a short song.
- NCEA Levels in drum kit performance
- Rockschool performance levels.
There is an assessment at the end of each term going over all the work covered to monitor your progress.

Intermediate lessons are designed to give students who already have a good foundation the next level in their playing. The course books will be challenging and push you to greater heights and expand your musical horizons. They are made so each week you will be learning new material in a fun and easy way.
What you will learn
- Reading material using semibreves, minims, crotchets, quavers, semiquavers, rests, broken semiquavers, triplets, five stroke, seven stroke, and nine stroke rolls.
- Beats using Semiquavers, folk beats, Latin, and Drum N Bass grooves.
- Performance pieces of your choice – minimum of one a term – with a transcription provided free, and drum duets.
- Learn to write snare solos and beats using our reading and beat knowledge
- Coordination using intermediate-based 4-way independence
- Rudiments single stroke roll, double stroke roll, paradiddle, flams, single stroke fours, double paradiddles, five stroke rolls, drags, and how to apply them on the kit.
- Fills using our new rhythms to come up with new and creative patterns that fit the music.
- Learn to transcribe beats, fills, and intermediate songs.

There is an assessment at the end of each term, going over the work covered, to monitor your progress.
For students that have been playing drums at least five years and have good prior knowledge, or by audition.

Follow a course outline (One year)
This will follow and complete the five-year outline already started in beginner and intermediate lessons.
What you will learn
- Reading using advanced rhythms and solos using the 40 international rudiments.
- Beats: Jazz, Afro Cuban, Metal, Second line, Half time shuffles, Odd time grooves, World beats, and Linear beats.
- Performance: Songs of your choice and/or advanced songs chosen by the teacher. Also advanced Drum duets.
- Writing: Learn to write a professional chart to use on gigs from covers to musicals.
- Coordination using advanced beats and over 20 different hi hat and ride cymbal patterns.
- Rudiments: learning to advance the speed and accuracy of the 40 international rudiments.Using them in snare solos, Drumline, and between hands and feet.
- Fills: using hand and feet ideas to create fast, technical, and musical fills.

These are custom lesson plans created just for you.
If you have already done a course or studied music but want to focus on one particular style or technique then this is for you.
We will sit down together and go through what it is you have in mind. We will then go over a few exercises to determine your weak spots. After this assessment, I will write a plan that you can move forward with. Though this will be your choice, there will be some fundamental parts that will be taught by default as I feel they can make a good drummer great.

- Beats and grooves of your choosing.
- Performance pieces of your choosing. Transcriptions provided for free.
- Writing beats and grooves of your choosing
- Coordination based on the style you choose to learn

An assessment will be done every 5 weeks to mark your progress.
Whether you are coming straight from school, or have been out working, and now would like to play music and intend on going to a University, this is for you.
This course could be a short stint to get a good idea of what you have to do, or a 1 or 2-year course to get you up to University level.
What you will learn:
- University level reading.
- Beats and grooves leading towards your degree.
- Performance pieces for university audition.
- Rudiments to help with your execution on the drums.
- Fills using rudiments aimed at your university degree.
- Aural training (if needed)
- Basic theory (if needed)
I will obtain the necessary entrance papers for you to work towards, and go through what you will be expected to do at your audition.
